Who we are and our role as data controller

mediashinez operates this commercial website offering programming courses. We act as the data controller under UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018. We decide how and why personal data is processed in connection with course enrolment, delivery, payments and support.

Who this notice applies to

This policy covers visitors, prospective students, enrolled learners, payment contacts and anyone who interacts with our site or services from the United Kingdom or elsewhere. It does not cover processing carried out by third-party platforms that host our courses if they act as independent controllers.

Categories of personal data we collect and their sources

We obtain data directly from you when you register, enrol, contact us or use the site. This includes identity details such as name, contact information including email and telephone number, billing address, course preferences and payment details processed via secure gateways. We may also receive technical data such as IP address, browser type and device identifiers from your device, plus usage data from cookies and analytics tools. Where relevant we receive information from payment providers or marketing partners with whom you have interacted.

Purposes of processing and legal bases

We process data to provide and manage course access, process payments, deliver support, send service messages and improve our offerings. Legal bases include contract performance for enrolment and delivery, legal obligations for tax and accounting records, legitimate interests for site security and service improvement, and consent for marketing communications. Each purpose is assessed to ensure the processing is necessary and proportionate.

Is providing your data obligatory

Supplying certain data is necessary to create an account, enrol in a course or receive support. If you do not provide required information we may be unable to complete your registration, process payments or deliver the course. Marketing preferences are always optional and can be changed at any time.

Cookies and similar technologies

We use cookies and similar technologies for essential site functions, performance measurement and, where you consent, for analytics and marketing. Details of the cookies we use, their purposes and how to manage preferences are set out in our separate Cookie Policy available from the cookie banner on every page.

Recipients and processors

We share data with carefully selected service providers that act as processors, including hosting providers, payment processors, email delivery services and analytics platforms. These parties are bound by contracts that require them to protect your data and process it only on our instructions. We may also disclose data where required by law, regulation or court order.

International transfers

Some of our processors are located outside the United Kingdom. Where personal data is transferred internationally we rely on UK Government adequacy regulations where available or implement appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses approved by the Information Commissioner’s Office together with additional technical and organisational measures.

How long we keep your data

We retain personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described. Enrolment and course records are kept for six years after the end of the course to meet accounting and legal obligations. Marketing consent records are retained until you withdraw consent. Technical logs are deleted after twelve months unless needed for security investigations.

Security and data minimisation

We apply appropriate technical and organisational measures including encryption in transit, access controls and regular security reviews. We collect only the data that is necessary for each purpose and do not retain it longer than required. No security measure can be guaranteed to be completely effective and users should also take reasonable steps to protect their own accounts.

Your data protection rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to access your data, request rectification or erasure, restrict or object to processing, and request data portability where applicable. To exercise any of these rights please contact us using the details on our Contacts page or email [email protected]. We will respond within one month, extendable by two further months for complex requests.

Withdrawing consent and objecting to marketing

Where processing is based on consent you may withdraw it at any time by updating your account preferences or contacting us. You can also object to direct marketing at any time using the unsubscribe link in emails or by writing to [email protected]. Objection to profiling for marketing purposes will be respected without affecting your course access.

Right to complain

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data you may lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner’s Office, the UK supervisory authority. Contact details and guidance are available on the ICO website. We encourage you to contact us first so we can try to resolve any concerns directly.

Children and age restrictions

Our programming courses are intended for individuals aged 16 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If we become aware that data from a child under 16 has been provided without appropriate consent we will delete it promptly.

Automated decision-making and profiling

We do not use automated decision-making that produces legal or similarly significant effects. Limited profiling may occur for course recommendation purposes based on your stated interests, but you can opt out of such recommendations without affecting core service delivery.

Changes to this policy

We review this policy regularly and update it when our practices or legal requirements change. The date at the top of the page indicates the most recent update. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy. If you have questions about any aspect of this notice please reach us via the contact form on our Contacts page or by writing to [email protected] or 35 Livery St, Birmingham B3 2PB, United Kingdom.
